Fans tuned in worldwide for BTS’ highly anticipated return, but the experience didn’t quite land for everyone.

During BTS COMEBACK LIVE: ARIRANG, held on 22 March at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, viewers watching via Netflix quickly took to social media to call out major subtitle issues that disrupted the livestream.

As Netflix’s first-ever global live music broadcast from Korea — streamed across 190 countries — expectations were sky-high. Instead, many fans reported that English subtitles were poorly synced, often appearing too late or mismatched with what the members were saying.

Some viewers noted that captions lagged so far behind that lyrics only appeared after songs had already ended. Others pointed out that lines from previous verses remained onscreen while performances had already moved on.

The frustration spread rapidly across platforms like Reddit and X, with fans describing the experience as distracting — and in some cases, unwatchable with subtitles turned on.

“I had high expectations… but the audio and subtitle synchronization were a mess,” one viewer shared online, adding that they hoped for a cleaner edited version post-stream.

While some acknowledged that slight delays during live talk segments are understandable due to real-time translation, criticism was sharper when it came to song lyrics. Fans argued that pre-prepared subtitles for performances should have been more accurately timed.

Given BTS massive global fandom, multilingual subtitles were seen as a crucial part of the viewing experience — making the technical shortcomings all the more noticeable.

Since then, some fans have noted that Netflix has fixed the subtitles on replay and slightly adjusted the audio mix — suggesting improvements may already be underway for post-live viewing.
