Hikaru Utada once again graces the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, joining Arca’s second weekend set, 20 April. Utada previously debuted at Coachella as part of 88rising’s Head in the Clouds Forever stage in 2023.
Following several hints and teasers on Utada’s official social media channels, as well as Arca’s, Utada finally appeared on stage to join the Barcelona-based avant-garde producer’s live take on her own remix of Utada’s ‘Electricity.’ Arca introduced the Japanese American singer-songwriter as the “legendary Hikaru" to the Gobi Tent crowd, who ecstatically received the pair.
The live rendition featured exquisite interpolations of ‘One Last Kiss,’ from Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, and ‘Passion’ (a.k.a. ‘Sanctuary’ in English), the well-loved theme tune from the video game Kingdom Hearts II.
An official music video for the Arca remix is out starting 22 April.
Utada will also be releasing a new single, ‘Mine or Yours’ on 2 May.
