Music streaming giant Spotify is taking a new step in its ongoing AI-era evolution, introducing Verified badges to help listeners distinguish human artists from AI-generated profiles.
The platform announced that artists who meet certain authenticity criteria will now receive a “Verified by Spotify” label, marked with a green check next to their name. According to Spotify, these criteria include signals like linked social media accounts, consistent listener activity, and real-world indicators such as merchandise drops or live shows.
Spotify shared that more than 99% of artists that users actively search for will be verified — a move that could cover hundreds of thousands of acts. The rollout is set to happen over the coming weeks, with priority given to artists who have made “important contributions to music culture and history,” rather than anonymous content farms.
Still, the update has sparked conversation across the industry. Critics point out that while the badge confirms an artist is human, it doesn’t necessarily mean their music is free from AI involvement. Creator rights advocate Ed Newton-Rex noted that the system could disadvantage independent artists who don’t tour or sell merch — key factors in Spotify’s verification process.
Meanwhile, Nick Collins highlighted the complexity of defining AI in music today, explaining that creative processes often fall somewhere between fully human-made and fully AI-generated.
The move comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Spotify’s handling of AI-generated content. In recent years, users have called for clearer labelling of AI-created tracks, while controversial cases — like the mysterious band The Velvet Sundown, later revealed to be an AI-supported project — have blurred the lines between artist and algorithm.
As AI continues to reshape the music landscape, Spotify’s new badge system signals a shift towards transparency — even if the conversation around what makes music “real” is far from over.
