A landmark of Chinese literature is taking centre stage in Singapore next year. JUST LIVE is bringing the National Ballet of China’s A Dream of Red Mansions to the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay from 12 to 15 March. This marks the Singapore premiere of the critically acclaimed ballet, which blends Western classical technique with the poetic elegance of Chinese aesthetics.

Adapted from Cao Xueqin’s literary masterpiece, the two-act ballet follows the romance of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, tracing the rise and fall of the Jia family. With choreography by Tong Ruirui and an evocative score by Ye Xiaogang, the performance conjures a dreamlike realm where past lives, fleeting memories, and ethereal beauty intertwine.

Each gesture and movement reflects over 60 years of the National Ballet of China’s artistic mastery, led by Executive Director and Producer Feng Ying. Set against sweeping visuals, intricate costumes, and world-class stage design, the show is a deep dive into love, destiny, and the ephemeral nature of life.

“We invite audiences to step into Jia Baoyu’s dream: a space where love, memory, and imagination intertwine,” shares choreographer Tong Ruirui. “It is our hope that audiences leave with a deep sense of connection to the timelessness of these characters’ lives.”

JUST LIVE’s Alain Brochu adds, “This collaboration allows us to showcase the exquisite artistry of one of the world’s premier ballet companies while immersing audiences in the poetic, dreamlike world of the Rong Mansion.”
