Young Cocoa and DEMI are back at it again with their smooth jam, 'Cheap Thrills,' going for a more stripped-back style that allows the audience to take comfort in the simpler things.
The song started as a solo venture but evolved into a collaborative track that melded the unique styles of Young Cocoa and DEMI together, creating the track's distinct easygoing vibe.
When asked about the partnership between the two, Young Cocoa shared, “I’ve always wondered how a track of mine would sound with a female artist. When JGreg and I finished the demo, we felt like the song was missing a big piece, and that’s when we thought of having DEMI on it."

DEMI expresses her perspective on the collaboration, saying, “Honestly, I have no idea why they thought I was the right fit for this demo,” the breakout artist laughs. “At first I couldn’t hear myself on this kind of track, but with a little push, I gave it a shot, and surprisingly, I loved how it turned out.”
Despite never sharing a studio space, the pair worked remotely online, finding the perfect rhythm for the song while sharing their perspectives on writing style and creative direction. The process behind the song allowed them to express their originality and creativity through the track.
'Cheap Thrills' captures Young Cocoa’s real-life experiences with building connections and navigating relationships. The inspiration stems from his chill personality and dating life in his college days. DEMI also expressed a similar sentiment as she shared, “I naturally give my all when I fall in love, so writing this was a fun and honest way to express that side of me.”
Produced by JGreg, the track is reminiscent of Y2K R&B and hip-hop but with a modern flair that gives it a rich and breezy vibe. “JGreg really brought the sauce,” Young Cocoa reflects. “We were aiming for that Neptunes, or Tyler-esque sound with a blend of pop.” DEMI highlights another layer of the track saying, “There’s definitely a Justin Timberlake vibe in the harmonies,” she adds. “Unexpected, but welcome!”.
The music video for 'Cheap Thrills' will be released on 31 July. Directed by Naki, the video captures the playful spirit of the track through a road trip adventure that takes an unexpected turn when their cars break down.
When asked about the idea behind the concept of the video, Young Cocoa muses, “We leaned into cinematography over narrative. It’s more about mood and visual strength, with a lot of stills and dynamic shots."
