BAKUNAWA is a monthly beat exploration& experimentation night started in 2012 that served as the cultivating grounds for some of Manila's most celebrated beatmakers (NO ROME, similarobjects, IZE, LIKEANIMALS, MokiMcfly, CRWN, Nights of Rizal, JOHNPOPE, BIN5, PILLOW TALK, ZOMTENDO, BIN5 and more)

it has now risen from its ashes in form of this refined monthly gathering that pays tribute to the ancient filipino game it was named after.

The Bakunawa is a mythical sea serpent bearing a mouth the size of a lake, a tongue as red as fire, and two pairs of massive wings. Enamored of the moon's beauty, the Bakunawa would fly straight out of the ocean and into the night sky to devour the moon whole—what we now know as a lunar eclipse. Pre-colonial tribesfolk would gather outside their homes banging loudly on pots and pans hoping to scare away the creature, others playing gentle songs with their bamboo instruments to soothe it to sleep so a brave warrior could close in for the kill.
With monthly "Bakunawa" events, Pinoy beatmakers and live electronic musicians of the BuwanBuwan Collective give a modern nod to these ancient lunar gatherings. With selections of both original and carefully curated electronic music, they aim to awaken, to mesmerize, and to bring people together.

Rounding up like-minded friends to have fun with each other’s ideas was the intention of Manila-based producer "similarobjects" when the collective was formed: "BuwanBuwan" refers to a traditional Filipino children’s game. Enacting the lunar eclipse, players draw a circle on the ground representing the moon, and must stay inside it. Meanwhile, one player acts as the Bakunawa: he may not enter the circle, but must touch another player within to switch places.

The BuwanBuwan Collective believes that in the playground that is music, everyone deserves a chance to be at the center. Being an odd fit for both the live band and EDM/DJ scenes locally, the group decided to play by its own rules. Thus, Bakunawa events are as much about people making noise as they are about the collective reclaiming the night—and sharing it with the now hundreds of like-minded listeners game enough to partake in each month.
