Drawing inspiration from other composers is not uncommon; but to further build and develop on the musical concepts is indeed something remarkable!

When Beethoven finally started working on his first symphony, he built it upon the achievements of Haydn and Mozart. However the humor heard in this work was unquestionably Beethoven’s. Although it took some time to fully develop his own style, this marked the beginning of his greatness in this particular instrumental genre.

Similarly, with operatic overtures already developed and perfected by composers like Mozart, Weber took inspiration and developed a new concept which was designed to develop an atmosphere to “set the stage” for the opera. Besides stating the significant themes from the opera, Weber also managed to create a concentrated orchestral synopsis of the opera’s atmosphere and plot with his overtures.

For the finale, BHSO will be presenting a world premiere piece by John Sharpley, “A Moment of Rest Upon the Wind” which is based on The Prophet, a book of prose poetry by writer Kahlil Gibran, dealing with many different subjects like love, freedom, religion and self-knowledge.
