On the 23rd of September, Christy Smith Trio will celebrate life as we know it with a few originals. Music from John Coltrane will be presented, acknowledging his birthday on the very day. Come on down for their interpretation of Bobby Hutcherson, Horace Silver as well.

-----------ABOUT THE ARTIST-----------------------------

CHRISTY SMITH / VOCALS AND BASS :

Christy Smith is a professional international musician, bassist, band leader, arranger, composer and teacher.

Christy Smith is a graduate of California State Fullerton with a Bachelor in music performance. Christy has had performances many of the regions with artists such as : Jeremy Monteiro, Michael Veerapen, Lewis Pragasam, Shiela Majid and many more. He has become an important role model for aspiring musicians in the region through his teachings. Next to performing in the region, he is teaching Double Bass and Bass Guitar at United World South East Asia and Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore. He has had several years of orchestral and big band experience, having been under the baton of Aaron Copland, Keith Clark, Carmen Dragon, Pat Williams and Mercer Ellington. Christy has also worked and performed with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Sarah Vaughn, Fela Kuti, Billy Higgins, Ernie Watts, Don Cherry, Ed Blackwell, Harold Land and many others.



TAN WEI XIANG / PIANO :

Weixiang is a latecomer into jazz, starting piano studies at 15 and jazz at 21 when he was in law school. A protege of Thelonius Monk alumni Victor Gaskin, Wei’s musical career has skyrocketed since his first gig at a hotel lounge. In the span of 12 years, he has performed with numerous international mainstream jazz icons, Grammy award winners and world music giants, and has toured extensively around the world. Wei was named as a “New Yorker of the Week” by NY1 station in the fall of 2008 for his work at churches for the homeless, as part of the Ouros Markovich Music Ministry.Wei has taught as an adjunct professor in New York University, and is currently a full-time lecturer of music at Lasalle College of the Arts.




DARRYL ERVIN / DRUMS :

Born and raised in Chicago, Darryl Ervin has been a professional musician for over 25 years. Darryl has studied with such greats as Ed Thigpen, Art Blakely, Bobby Hutcherson and Billy Higgins and has studied music theory, education and Composition at Columbia College of performing arts in Chicago. He has extensive experience in a wide variety of musical genres and has performed all over the United States and internationally.

Some of the great musicians Darryl have shared the stage with include: Houston Person, Etta Jones, Etta James, Freddie Hubbard, Von and George Freeman, Lester Bowie, Wynton and Delfayo Marsalis, John Lewis and Jimmy Smith just to name a few,

Darryl has also recorded with many jazz greats including trumpeters Malachi Thompson and his Africa Brass Band ('Downbeat" award winning recording of 'Buddy Bolden's Rag'), Carmel Jones and Lester Bowie, Don Bennett's 'Sleeping Giant' and Christy Smith's 'The Time Is Now' just to name a few.

Darryl arrived in Singapore after touring the Middle East and Netherlands with bassist Eldee Young.

Residing in Singapore for the last 15 years, Darryl has performed at many of Singpore's major venues as well as through out the region and the Middle East. Darryl has also worked extensively with local and regional talents such as: Jeremy and Clarisse Monteiro, Michael Verrapen, Junji and David Gomes and many other.

Darryl is also heavily involved with the education of Singapore's rising musical talent.
