Esplanade Presents: Anise

Since moving back from a foreign country and finding no solace in friends who had become strangers, strangers who wanted to be friends, and strange friendships, Anise sought to rephrase her solitude and new reality into stories. She writes about Singapore and the heartbreak it sometimes brings, and the rough terrain of love and loss. Her soft vocals have been described as “feathery” and “misty” while her stage presence lures the audience into her cocoon of nervous energy and beautiful brutality. Anise pairs off-kilter chords with tender lyrics and poignant storytelling in her songs. Occasionally, cellist Zhong Ren Koh accompanies her, but otherwise her quiet set is usually stripped down to the marrow.
