In View of Distant Lands by Yong Siew Toh Conservatory New Music Ensemble

In an evening of minimalism, embark on a journey across the Far East and fill your imagination with the wonders of its lands. Take in the rich tonal textures of a mesmerising sunrise in Chen Fang-Chi’s Dawn II; feel the mighty force of thunderbolts in Jonathan Harvey’s Vajra; reflect on the Middle Eastern influences in Liza Lim’s The Heart’s Ear, which draw from elements of Sufi music; and dive into the mystical melodies of the Indonesian gamelan in Evan Ziporyn’s Eel Bone for the string quartet. Japanese composer Jo Kondo takes minimalism in a different direction with Words. Treating music as a language, he takes phrases and breaks them down just as how sentences can be broken down into words and letters. Come, explore these distant lands with the YST Conservatory New Music Ensemble.
