Founded in 2010 by Firmann Salim—aka Dj Rumshot from Dub Skank’in Hifi Soundsystem—Instigator Afrobeat Orchestra is Singapore’s first reggae outfit. Influenced by afrobeat, afrosoul, afro-brazilian, funk, reggae and ska, the band has been performing at Dub Skank'in Hifi Soundsystem parties since 2010. Comprising a horn, percussion and a tight rhythm section, the band mixes African elements of jazz and afrobeat from the likes of Fela Kuti, with boisterous horn lines from the likes of The Skatalites, and nuances of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and heavy roots reggae bass lines reminiscent of Jamiacan soundsystem culture.
