SSO National Day Concert: A Singaporean Showcase

Celebrate Singapore’s 53rd National Day with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Singapore Symphony Choruses in this all-Singaporean programme on August 11at the Esplanade Concert Hall. The SSO National Day Concert will be conducted by Darrell Ang, featuring six homegrown composers, from veteran pioneers Leong Yoon Pin and Phoon Yew Tien, to rising names Wang Chen Wei and Syafiqah 'Adha Mohd Sallehin. Violinist Kam Ning is the soloist in Chen Zhangyi’s Vanda Concerto, while the choirs of the Singapore Symphony family join forces in Kelly Tang’s arrangement of the now classic “Home”.

Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Sichuan Symphony since December 2016, Darrell Ang is a regular guest at the Mariinsky Theatre - having caught the attention of Valery Gergiev - and conducts monthly symphony and opera performances in St. Petersburg and at the new Mariinsky Theatre (Primorsky Stage) in Vladivostok. This season he returns to the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, Queensland Symphony, Singapore Symphony, the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento, Munich Radio Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony and National Taiwan Symphony. His growing operatic profile includes recent performances of Don Giovanni and Rigoletto at the Mariinsky, Carmen at Estonian National Opera, Die Zauberflöte and Nijinsky's Tagebuch in Bordeaux, Der fliegende Holländer in Singapore and Così fan tutte in Toulon.

Hailed by Strad magazine as a “strong artistic personality”, Singaporean violinist,Ning Kam has gone on to perform all over the world both as soloist and chamber musician. She was the Second Prizewinner at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2001 and was praised by Belgium’s De Standaard as “manifestly the best violinist of the competition”. She also won the Flemish Radio and Television Audience Prize in that year. She has performed under the batons of conductors such as Yehudi Menuhin, Lorin Maazel, Okko Kamu, Lan Shui, Louis Langree and Eri Klas with orchestras such as the Cleveland Orchestra, Singapore Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic, City of London Sinfonia, National Orchestra of Belgium and the Phoenix and Tucson Symphony Orchestras.
