ADOY on playing at music festivals, their journey as indie artists, and future aspirations

When it comes to making music, Juhwan, Zee, Dayoung, and Geunchang are masters of their own craft.

Korean indie pop act ADOY are currently one of the most unique bands out there, with a stellar discography that boasts their musical individuality. Since their debut in 2017, they have amassed a cult following and have propelled to be of household name status in South Korea.

The ‘Wonder’ act are no strangers to performing overseas. From bringing their music to Wanderland 2019 in Manila, Philippines, a sold-out show at Singapore’s Esplanade Annexe Studio, and most recently at the VERY Festival 2022 in Bangkok, Thailand, the band has proven to be international festival favourites and anticipated artists everywhere they go. With their memorable performances and ability to relate to their fans with their music, it is easy to ascertain why.

It is impossible to mention ADOY without bringing up the vibrant aesthetics they showcase with each music release. Fans have the utmost praise for their distinctive anime-inspired album art, which set them apart from other independent artists. ADOY are well-known for skillfully weaving together beautiful music along with aesthetically-pleasing accompanying videos. The result? A charming blend of music and art that immediately puts audiences into an uplifting and dreamlike mood.

Even if you are listening to their music for the first time, you will find yourself unintentionally bopping along to the infectious synth-pop tunes, which aptly encapsulate the kind of artists that ADOY are.

From the music they’ve released thus far, you can tell that the band genuinely enjoy making music together. Their outlook on the brand of music they release is inspiring and positive qualities of their music that certainly shine through in their repertoire to date.

They shared: “...we hope people get a positive feeling from listening [to our music] and also going to our show. Positivity is best.”

Bandwagon caught up with the four-piece band right after their stupendous VERY Festival 2022 set for an interview where they shared their best experiences from bringing their music overseas, their growth as artists since their debut, and the message that they aspire to spread to their fans with their music.

Hi ADOY! This is our second time to check you out at a music festival, the first being at Wanderland in 2019. What are your favourite things about music festivals?

We think that festivals are a great way to introduce us to people who don't know us because there's a lot of different artists and also we can compare ourselves to other artists and try to be as good as them. We think it's a great opportunity always.

What is the best part about bringing your music overseas and performing for your international fans?

Every country is obviously a bit different. The same show that we always bring kind of turns out differently because of the vibe. So I think that's fun for us to evolve as we move from city to city, town to town.

What has your musical journey been like so far? Could you share with us some of your best moments as an indie pop band?

Now [is our best moment]. We just played, you know, at a really good festival in Thailand. So we think it’s now. We always have good vibes when we come to Bangkok because they always give us positive energy.

It has been five years since your debut. How have you grown as artists since releasing the CATNIP album in 2017? Could you tell us about your future aspirations for your music career?

Catnip seems like such a long time ago to us because we were five struggling musicians trying to come together and we kind of never dreamed of coming to countries like Thailand at that time. We just wanted to play onstage in a small club in Korea. But we’ve obviously evolved and we've gotten a bit more confident in ourselves that our music can transcend language and race. We feel very happy that we have this opportunity to play here abroad.

In the future we would like to become a bigger band. Earn some more money *laughs*, play in a better setting, and have more staff with us maybe. That’s who we want to be.

What do you want people to think about when they hear the name “ADOY”?

We wish ADOY seem hard-working and put out good music. The main thing is that we hope people get a positive feeling from listening [to our music] and also going to our show. Positivity is best.
