Awich has unveiled a stunning music video for her new single 'The Union'

Set on the Japanese rapper's home island of Okinawa, the Hideto Hotta-directed video sees Awich pay homage to her roots by spotlighting the sights of Okinawa as well as its rich culture.

Together with a sea of black-clad dancers, the 36-year-old can be seen performing a dance whose origin can be traced back to when Okinawa was known as the Ryukyu Kingdom. Created as a type of martial arts, it took on a new identity to evade the Japanese empire's erasure of the Ryukyu Kingdom's culture.

The video also includes an appearance by Awich's daughter, Toyomi.

'The Union' is the title track from Awich's latest studio record, which was released on 25 October. The 12-track project also features a team-up with Okinawa natives Tsubaki, OZworld, and CHICO CARLITO and collaborations with artists such as GADORO and BIM.

A hip-hop act with authoritative vocals, Awich, whose real name is Akiko Urasaki, was part of the star-studded lineup of artists who performed at the inaugural edition of Rolling Loud Thailand earlier this year. Most recently, the 'GILA GILA' artist staged her first-ever headlining concert at the K-Arena Yokohama on 5 November.
