Bandwagon Mix #67: Jayda B & YonYon (Bae Tokyo)

Every week, Bandwagon invites a guest to do a mix for us. Rather than a standard interview where the artist explains their influences, we figured it’d be more potent if you simply listened to the music.

We provide the context, they provide the sounds.

Founded in 2015 by Atlanta's Jayda B, Japanese creative agency Bae Tokyo has come a long way in a very short span.

With a stated ethos that aims to embolden "women by providing a platform for DJs and artists regardless of race, ethnicity and sexual identity", the burgeoning collective has received widespread support in Tokyo's underground electronic community and beyond. Rapidly expanding, the "Bae" movement has now successfully created an international outlet for women in music, art and entertainment.

From her start in ATL as the curator of #DENTradio to her gig as a host on Japan's Block FM, Jayda B has always possessed an uncanny ear for showcasing promising new artists regardless of culture, language or geography. But beyond using her platform to support burgeoning talent, Jayda B is also a pretty amazing DJ in her own right.

Likewise, her friend and trusted director of Bae Tokyo, YonYon, is prodigious multi-faceted force as well. A singer-songwriter, DJ, beat-maker, booking agent and promoter - the Korean-born and Japanese-raised creative is very highly regarded in the industry. While her DJ sets reflect her tasteful influences in future beats, UK bass, grime and hip-hop, her band showcases a whole other side.

Dubbed as Kotoba Select, YonYon's acclaimed group is a heady blend of indie rock, R&B groove and J-Pop melodies. Most recently, she's also been busy as the liaison for Bridge - a project that works to help underground artists from Europe, Asia and America perform at Japanese venues.

As you can probably tell from Jayda B and YonYon's past exploits, these girls are about more than just individual artistry - they're striving to build a community. This weekend, Bae Tokyo's leading ladies will be dropping by Singapore (thanks to ATTAGIRL) for a string of shows at Blu Jaz Cafe, Kinki and Refuge - so you'll have plenty of opportunities to catch them in action.

In the meantime, both Jayda B and YonYon have joined forces to craft a stunning back-to-back mix just for Bandwagon.
