Billlie on telling relatable stories through their songs: "We hope we can form a bond of sympathy and comfort with people with our music"

When Billlie made their debut with their EP, the Billage of perception: chapter one, they opened a gateway between our world and a fantastical universe of their creation.

Home to peculiar tales which the K-pop girl group have told through tunes of varying styles — including 'RING X RING', 'GingaMingaYo (the strange world)', and 'RING ma Bell (what a wonderful world)' — and a series of visually stunning music videos, it is a place that Billlie's fans, Belllie’ve, do not want to leave despite having already spent a year in it.

Being newcomers to the K-pop scene, Billlie still have a long journey ahead of them and just this August, the septet reassured Belllie’ve through their latest EP, the Billage of perception: chapter two, that those who stick around will be rewarded with more enthralling stories.

In what will be remembered as an exciting year for Billlie, Moon Sua, Suhyeon, Haram, Tsuki, Siyoon, Haruna, and Sheon were also able to strengthen their relationship with their international fans and spread their music to new listeners at YouTube Fanfest 10, which was held in Singapore on 11 November (just a day after they celebrated their first anniversary).

"We were given this grateful opportunity to represent Korea and perform at YouTube Fanfest 10. We’re already very nervous about performing since the audience from around the world will be tuning into the show over the livestream. But since one of Billlie’s biggest strengths is our stage performance, we will do our best to fill the stage with a fierce performance," shared Haram before Billlie's appearance at the event.

Delivering on their promise, the Mystic Story act thrilled festival-goers as they brought their stories to the real world in a set that showed off their breathtaking stage presence.

In an interview before Billlie's YouTube Fanfest 10 performance, Bandwagon caught up with the group to find out about the messages their music explores, which genre they hope to take on next, and how they came up with 'B@ck 2 where we Belong' — a love letter dedicated to their fans.

Hi, Billlie! What are some songs that you can’t get out of your head at the moment?

SUHYEON: One of the songs that I can’t get out of my head these days is our debut song, ‘RING X RING.’ I recently looked up our debut stage performance, and it really reminded me of our debut days. Actually, we celebrated our first anniversary on 10 November, so I listen to ‘RING X RING’ most often these days!

What is one film or TV series that you enjoy watching as a group?

TSUKI: I watch more variety shows than films or dramas these days. I’ve been watching MBC’s Midnight Horror Story recently, and got especially more into it since I had the honour of being on the show. It’s a storytelling challenge programme where the cast reads horror stories from the viewers, and I really recommend the show to people who like horror and scary stories.

It has been a year since you made your debut. What has your journey been like since then?

MOON SUA: I can’t believe a year has passed already! Time flies. I have been dreaming about being on stage for a very long time and was able to make the dream come true as a member of Billlie. I am so happy to be able to meet our fans and make precious memories with them. All members of Billlie, including myself, will always give our best to deliver great music and performances for our fans.

What messages do you hope to share with your listeners through your music?

SIYOON: Billlie’s music delivers messages about the worries, feelings, and stories about growing up to be adults. Since everyone goes through this period of growing up and becoming adults, we hope we can form a bond of sympathy and comfort with people with our music. We will always be on our fans’ side with music that they can enjoy and sympathise with!

Your EP, the Billage of perception: chapter two, incorporates elements of rock, synth-pop, dance-pop, and R&B. Are there any other genres that you would love to explore in your future releases?

SHEON: Even if it’s not for our next album, I really want to try the genre of jazz sometime. I think Billlie’s biggest strength lies in the fact that we can reinterpret and recreate diverse genres of music by adding Billlie’s own colours. That is why I really want to see what we can create by adding the unique voices of our members to jazz, which also has its unique charms. We have a lot of new genres and stories to share, so please look forward to our next album!

the Billage of perception: chapter two includes ‘B@ck 2 where we Belong’, a song that’s dedicated to your fans. What was it like writing it together? What were you hoping to convey to your fans through it?

HARUNA: ‘B@ck 2 where we Belong’ is a fan song that we wrote the lyrics to. While writing the lyrics line by line, we thought deeply about how to better show our love and appreciation for our fans. We are able to perform and showcase our music all thanks to our fans being with us, so we wanted to pay back and give our fans that positive energy with the song. "I'll be there, where you at". Please be there for us, Belllie’ve!

Moving forward, what are some goals that you have for yourselves?

MOON SUA: Our goal is to be a global artist, and we will continue to work hard for that goal! We will show our music, performance, and stories to global music fans, so please stay tuned!
