Cole Sprouse and Kiko Mizuhara are heading to Singapore for the Asian premiere of Vintage Violence, which will close the 37th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF).

Taking place at Capitol Theatre on 1 November, the screening marks the return of a dedicated Festival Closing for the first time since 2014. The pair will be joined by Ukrainian-American director Eugene Kotlyarenko, following the film’s world premiere in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness programme.

Blending crime, romance, action and dark comedy, Vintage Violence follows Carter, a livestreamer whose discovery of nineteenth-century Levi’s jeans in an abandoned Colorado mine takes him to Tokyo’s lucrative denim market. What begins as a chance to cash in spirals into underworld chaos involving a denim obsessive, a debt-ridden boyfriend and a revenge-seeking exiled yakuza.

The film channels its characters’ screen-saturated lives through split screens, livestreams, text messages and online chatter. Music fans can also look out for a gaming arcade chase soundtracked by Jun Togawa, with a glitching song and Bluetooth earbuds folded into the action.

Ahead of the premiere, Kotlyarenko, Sprouse and Mizuhara will take part in an In Conversation With session at the National Museum of Singapore on 31 October, 11 AM. The discussion will explore the making of Vintage Violence, Kotlyarenko’s fascination with contemporary screen culture, and the lead actors’ collaboration and experiences across their careers.

They join a festival dialogue programme featuring Aamir Khan, Peter Chan and Shim Eun-kyung on 22 October, Hirokazu Koreeda on 24 October, and Anthony Wong on 29 October.

The 37th SGIFF runs from 21 October to 1 November.

Tickets for the Vintage Violence events go on sale on 11 October at 12 PM via sgiff.com.
