Ed Sheeran named 2017's best-selling global recording artist

Ed Sheeran has been crowned 2017's best-selling international recording artist.

The list, compiled by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), studies music streams across multiple avenues and platforms, as well as digital and physical album sales annually to chart the year's best selling musicians. 2017 was dominated by Ed Sheeran, whose third studio album, Divide, was released last March. The record spawned chart-topping singles such as 'Shape Of You' and 'Castle On The Hill'. The music video for 'Shape Of You' has reached over 3.3 billion views since its debut in January last year.

“The success Ed has achieved is astonishing and testament to his ability to write and perform songs that connect with a truly global fanbase," Frances Moore, IFPI's Chief Executive said to Variety in a statement. "This year’s Global Top 10 really is a ‘who’s who’ of popular music. Each artist has a unique impact on the music industry through the talent and energy they are channeling through their work.”

Number two on the 2017 list was Drake, who fell from his top spot in 2016. Taylor Swift – the only woman on the list – ranked third with the release of her album, Reputation. Also featured on the list is Linkin Park, whose catalogue sky-rocketed in sales after the untimely passing of lead singer Chester Bennington
