Filmhouse opens at Golden Mile Tower, bringing arthouse cinema back to Singapore

Estimated:  reading

Independent cinema has a new home. Filmhouse officially opens on 3 February at Golden Mile Tower, taking over the former site of The Projector, and marking a fresh chapter for Singapore’s cinephile community.

Helmed by Sharon Tan (former GM of The Projector) and Walter Navarro (former head of programming), the new space reunites familiar faces from the beloved venue, with a renewed mission: to spotlight cinema beyond the mainstream and keep the spirit of independent film culture alive.

"Filmhouse exists to strengthen this ecosystem," says Navarro. "We’re here to amplify diverse filmmaking and the community keeping film culture alive in Singapore.”

A soft launch with evolving vibes

Though still undergoing refurbishment, Filmhouse has launched with a soft opening from 3 February, coinciding with the buzz of awards season. Visitors can expect a dynamic, work-in-progress experience—one that grows week to week as new features roll out.

Design takes centre stage thanks to Nathan Yong, who reimagines the foyer with a bold new visual identity, plus custom furnishings under his Nathan Home brand arriving by March.

Upgraded screens and sounds

Filmhouse elevates its tech game while embracing the past:

  • The Green Room debuts a 4K xenon lamp projector

  • Redrum and Blue Room boast 2K laser projectors

  • New MAG speakers complement a restored 50-year-old Altec-Lansing amplifier—a nod to old-school endurance

Artist Speak Cryptic returns with revamped murals, while design studio Knuckles & Notch brings their signature chaos to upcoming merch drops.

From popcorn to party cocktails

Snacks get an indie twist. Alongside classic cinema popcorn, Filmhouse will rotate seasonal flavours and treats.

After screenings, the Snackbar transforms into Trailer Bar, a late-night hangout run by Ritz and Rush Ang of Enclave Bar fame. Expect house pours, natural wines, themed cocktails, and a vibe made for artists and musicians looking to wind down or jam out.

Love is a Monster (from 10 February)

Just in time for Valentine’s, this anti-romcom lineup explores chaotic and obsessive love:

  • Thirst (Park Chan-wook’s cult vampire hit)

  • A Useful Ghost (Thai-Singapore black comedy)

  • Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrmann’s dizzying classic)

  • Death Becomes Her (a satire of vanity and immortality)

Perfect for the heartbreakers, heartbroken, or cynics seeking a side of camp with their popcorn.

Pink Screen returns for Pride

Pink Screen, Singapore’s iconic LGBTQIA+ film festival, returns this Pride Month in partnership with NBCUniversal International. Expect a sharp, inclusive lineup that champions queer stories on the big screen.

A community space built around cinema

Beyond films, Filmhouse is a cultural engine for connection. Monthly events at Trailer Bar will spotlight Singapore’s vibrant creative scenes—featuring:

  • Warrior’s Jam (helmed by Tim DeCotta)

  • Singing Social Club

  • Collaborations with Singapore Butoh Collective

Filmhouse will also roll out school outreach programmes, introducing younger audiences to communal cinema and critical film appreciation.

“Giving time to stories and to each other is an act of resistance,” says the Filmhouse team, echoing the late Agnès Varda. Here, cinema is about empathy, presence, and community.
