From 'Bling Empire' to global stages: Kim Lee opens up about the highs & hustle of her DJ career

From spinning at Ultra to holding down her dream residency at Wynn Las Vegas, Kim Lee has carved out a space as one of the world's most recognisable DJs. Known for her high-energy sets, genre-blending sound, and effortless charisma, Kim continues to build bridges between music, culture, and global nightlife.

Recently, she even stopped by Singapore to headline LAVO's relaunch at Marina Bay Sands. Bandwagon took the oppurtunity to talk to the multifaceted superstar to talk about her most unforgettable moments behind the decks, the realities of touring, and why Asia will always have her heart.

You’ve performed everywhere from Ultra to Wynn Las Vegas—what’s one moment behind the decks that still gives you chills?

Performing at massive festivals like Ultra and securing my dream residency at Wynn Las Vegas has been unreal, but one moment that still gives me chills was my first set at Encore Beach Club on my birthday. I teared up behind the decks—it felt like the ultimate birthday gift. After 12 years of DJing worldwide, standing there was a proud “I made it” moment. Huge thanks to my agent Sujit and the Wynn family, especially Ryan and Wayne, for making this incredible journey possible.

Your sets blend everything from Amapiano to Latin rhythms. How do you discover and curate new music for your shows?

I listen to a lot of music. All kinds of genres because music is constantly changing. There’s new artists and music every day. Being an open format DJ is more work because I need to listen to what’s hot in all genres.

What’s your approach to connecting with a crowd when you’re performing in a country for the first time?

I do my research with music and mix my style in there. I love engaging and meeting new people. I always play music people can dance to and it’s been working so far.

You’ve worked with and shared stages with so many DJs—how have your peers in the industry inspired or supported you along the way?

I’m truly grateful for my DJ friends in the industry who’ve inspired, supported, and shared great advice. Their guidance has been a blessing, and it reminds me how important it is to lift each other up in this community.

With your roots in classical piano, how does that background shape your approach to DJing and production?

Piano training sharpens my sense of rhythm. It trains my ear to pick tracks that sound great together and keeps the crowd hyped.

What’s a misconception people have about life as a touring DJ?

A big misconception about life as a touring DJ is that it’s a glamorous, easy gig. Far from it! The nightlife industry is intense and not for the weak. You’re battling late nights, constant jet lag, and the relentless pressure to deliver a high-energy set, no matter how exhausted or off you might feel. It takes serious passion, resilience, and dedication to thrive in this world. You’ve got to truly love what you do to keep up with the grind and make it last in this business.

You’ve been a major presence on Bling Empire—how has the show shaped how people perceive you, especially outside the music world?

Being on Bling Empire has been a wild ride and definitely shaped how people see me beyond my music career. I’m often stopped by fans who say, “You’re the realest one on the show!” or “Wow, you’re so nice in person!”—which always cracks me up because I wonder, “Wait, do I come off as mean on TV?” The funniest part is when I randomly get comments about an episode from years ago, and I’m like, “That was four years ago, let it go!” Bling Empire has given me this amazing platform to connect with people in a new way, and I’m grateful for the love and laughs it brings, even if it comes with some unexpected throwbacks!

With so much on your plate—DJing, producing, filming, fitness, travel—how do you stay grounded and creative?

I think working out really helps me stay grounded and creative. It keeps me sharp and when I’m in good shape I can perform my best.

What does a typical “day off” look like when you’re not performing or filming?

I usually would work out then hang out with my three cats.

You recently headlined the relaunch of LAVO Singapore—what did you think of the space, and how did you enjoy the experience?

I was thrilled to headline the grand relaunch of LAVO Singapore—what an incredible honour! The experience was absolutely electric. The newly revamped venue at Marina Bay Sands hotel is nothing short of stunning and the view was just breathtaking. There were so many beautiful people there! Everyone was dancing and having a good time.

Finally, what’s one venue, festival, or creative project that’s still on your bucket list—and why does it matter to you?

I hope to perform in Singapore and Asia more. I just love it out there. It’s so beautiful from the culture to the food. I have the best fans who always support me from Asia. So that’s definitely on my bucket list.
