How active are you? We ask Stopgap, Take Two, and more from the DBS Marina Regatta line-up

Let's face it — outside of school, we make many excuses not to wake up at 6am for that morning jog, or drop by the community centre gym in the evening.

But as we age, we soon realize that our metabolic rate isn't as battle-hardened as it used to be, and that is — as anyone over 25 can attest — a scary realization.

Looking at the upcoming DBS Marina Regatta, the biggest water sports festival of the year, we thought we'd investigate the crazy, sweaty bands that appear on our local stages — and who are also set to perform at the festival's beach concert stage Sound House — and ask them: how active are they really?

TAKE TWO

How active are you? (eg. physical sports, exercise etc.)

Peng Sing (guitarist): We are complete slobs and the only exercise we get is from our gigs! I think the only person that actually plays sports regularly is Paddy who will go kick ball with his soccer kakis every other weekend.

Which sport is your favourite? Why?

Peng Sing: Paddy is the soccer guy. I used to play table tennis because he's cheena like that. David likes basketball. John's into baking bread, it's a super intense sport. Jeryl absolutely slays at bowling, he used to bowl for his school and NUS.

Paddy (vocalist): Football, because you don't need to be the best team to win.

It was unintentional, but he remembers lying down in pain for a good 5 minutes. We guess that's why he switched to bowling instead."

— Take Two's Peng Sing, on bandmate Jeryl's unfortunate soccer incident at 14 years old.

When did you first start playing it?

Peng Sing: Most of us started playing quite early, like primary school days. But nowadays work and music just takes up most of our time :'(

Paddy: Relatively late at 14, in the public spaces of Circuit Road.

What’s your most embarrassing moment during a game?

Peng Sing: Jeryl got kicked in the balls once while playing soccer when he was in Sec 2. It was unintentional, but he remembers lying down in pain for a good 5 minutes. We guess that's why he switched to bowling instead.

Paddy: We used to play void deck style football at a big multipurpose space we called "Wembley". It had a massive cantilever shelter with lots of steel pillars. On one occasion, I was on the ball and did not see where I was going. I ran right into one of these pillars with a loud resounding "gong!"

Which of these activities at the DBS Marina Regatta would you like to try — stand-up yoga, paddle boarding, or the tallest inflatable slide in Southeast Asia? Why?

Paddy: Is there a way to combine all three into a Triple Threat Throwdown? Performing stand-up yoga, on a paddle board, going down the tallest inflatable slide in SEA? COME ON PEOPLE LET'S MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Do you know what zorbing is? Would you try it without knowing what it is?

Paddy: Is that some sort of exotic Asian biscuit/pastry? There are "Wife Biscuits" (lao por bing). A 'zor bing' would probably be equally sensational. Or perhaps it is an activity — a particularly AZORBING ACTIVITY HA HA HA (help... We need help... please)

But yes, we are game for any sort of activity and/or food. Food activities, basically. Or as we like to call it — foodivities.

STOPGAP

How active are you? (eg. physical sports, exercise etc.)

We used to be pretty active back in the day, not too sure about now though #dadbod. Calvin used to be in the SA Rugby team, Yew Jin used to be in the AC Barker Basketball team, Adin was in the AC Baker swim team (well, for 2 years only lah), Grayson is too small to do any sports. We’re joking haha!

Or are we?

Which sport is your favourite? Why?

Yew Jin, Adin & Eldad like basketball. Eldad supports the Chicago Bulls. The others fave sports are irrelevant because they have been outnumbered.

I’m sure if you asked the five of us to hop in a boat, we’d give it a shot. Can’t say how fast or far we’d make it though!"

— Stopgap, on trying out dragon boating.

When did you first start playing it?

Yew Jin and Adin used to play basketball in sec school all the time, during recess, after school, you name it.

What’s your most embarrassing moment during a game?

Adin tore off someone’s shorts during a game of touch rugby once. Calvin kicked the floor instead of a soccer ball and injured his hip.

Have you ever tried dragon boating? If yes, when did you start? If no, would you pick it up if you had the chance?

Grayson is a professional dragon-boater. Just look at the size of that guy. I’m sure if you asked the five of us to hop in a boat, we’d give it a shot. Can’t say how fast or far we’d make it though!

Which of these activities at the DBS Marina Regatta would you like to try — stand-up yoga, paddle boarding, or the tallest inflatable slide in Southeast Asia? Why?

CONFIRM WATER SLIDE! We can release the inner child and give in to juvenile pleasures.

Do you know what zorbing is? Would you try it without knowing?

Yes we've seen enough zorbing videos on the Internet. It sounds oddly sexual if you don't know what it is, so maybe not.

THE MADHATTER PROJECT

How active are you? (eg. physical sports, exercise etc.)

Jamie (drums): I enjoy being active, going out for walks and cycles in the great outdoors, playing different sports.

I run once or twice each week, and try to be involved in any sporting activity organised by friends or organisations/societies. On holiday I love nature, and enjoy going on rambles, hikes, and scenic cycling routes.

Which sport are your favourite? Why?

I enjoy walking and hiking the most (if that is considered in any form a sport). I enjoy taking in nature, the sights and sounds around, the sun, the wind, the weather, and the company and conversations hopefully — if I'm with someone who can be patient enough to hike with me!

Otherwise, I enjoy most sport, not any in particular or having the fortune to go on and play any at very high levels. I used to play squash in JC, and enjoyed the game for its agility and creative play. Now that we're out of school, I enjoy being a social couch football critic, watching football and listening to the rest of my band mates discuss football tactics socially.

...it was fun, the views were absolutely breathtaking, and I have went on many hiking trips since."

— The MadHatter Project's Jamie Lee, on her first ever hiking trip.

When did you first start playing it?

I went on my first hiking trip when I was on a short summer language immersion programme in Switzerland. At that point in time my only reference to anything uphill was probably with Bukit Timah hill, standing at a grand height of 164m.

So my first hike from Lac Noir to Charmey came as a relative challenge, but it was fun, the views were absolutely breathtaking, and I have went on many hiking trips since.

What’s your most embarrassing moment during a game?

Its a little hard to have an 'embarrassing' moment, but there was time at the start where I had to give up the hike, for lack of will power and mental strength, and to this day, I still find it embarrassing, and it has been one of my biggest regrets not reaching the end destination.

Which of these activities at the DBS Marina Regatta would you like to try — stand-up yoga, paddle boarding, or the tallest inflatable slide in Southeast Asia? Why?

Paddle boarding. Not too sure what it is, but I hope I think it has something to do with a bit of paddling and a bit of wake boarding? Always liked to give wake boarding a try!

Do you know what zorbing is? Would you try it without knowing?

Yep, I have tried this before. But I went for it without having a clue what it was, so hope that answers the question!

THE NEPTUNE WAVES

How active are you? (eg. physical sports, exercise etc.)

We are all really active. Dan (guitarist) and Nat (guitarist/vocalist) cycle at least twice a weak and Ruben gyms occasionally.

Which sport is your favourite? Why?

Cycling because it gives us an excuse to hang out with our friends at night *laughs*.

Dan's brakes snapped while he was going downhill on a $60 bike, so he jumped off and broke his pinky."

— The Neptune Waves, on guitarist Dan's mishap during a ride downhill.

When did you start?

We all started about a month ago actually.

What’s your most embarrassing moment during a game?

We have embarrassing moments almost every time we ride. Dan's brakes snapped while he was going downhill on a $60 bike so he jumped off and broke his pinky.

Which of these activities at the DBS Marina Regatta would you like to try — stand-up yoga, paddle boarding, or the tallest inflatable slide in Southeast Asia? Why?

We're all really excited for the tallest inflatable slide, we might play the gig in our swimming trunks.

Do you know what zorbing is? Would you try it without knowing what it is?

Yeah, sure! Why not?
