How Marshmello went from bedroom beats to global phenomenon

Before the sold-out shows and star-studded collaborations, Marshmello was just a faceless kid making beats in his bedroom—with no name, no fame, and no plan. What started as a personal project exploded into a global movement, entirely by accident.

In a rare, candid interview on YouTuber Daniel Wall's two hour long video, Marshmello shared the story behind the helmet, the music, and the mindset that fueled his rise. “I always felt like I had nothing to lose,” he says in a rare, unfiltered interview. His breakout hit 'Alone' was born from exactly that feeling—being isolated in a new city, pouring raw emotion into music. “It was simple, but it felt true.”

His musical journey began at nine with GarageBand, long before the helmet and hype. “Producers had to exile themselves,” he laughs. Years of trial, error, and YouTube tutorials led to his signature genre-blending sound—pop-punk, trap, Jersey club, EDM—all stitched together with heart.

One turning point? A basement-made remix of Justin Bieber’s 'Where Are Ü Now' that caught Skrillex’s attention. “That was the remix,” he says. “The rest was history.”

The now-iconic helmet? Originally a 14-pound steel behemoth, it gave him something invaluable: anonymity. “I didn’t want the pressure of being social. That mystery gave me freedom,” he says. Ironically, the less people saw, the more they listened.

Since then, Marshmello has collaborated with Juice WRLD, Khalid, Selena Gomez and more, always guided by one rule: “I’ll only do something if I feel it in my soul.”

“I did the mystery thing. Now I’ve got stories to tell,” he says. And fans? They’re still listening.
