ILLIT are done trying to make sense of mixed signals.
The group released their fifth mini-album, BREAK EVEN, on 26 October, alongside a music video for lead single ‘You’re Under Arrest’. Across four tracks, the EP follows a relationship reaching the point where there is neither loss nor gain, before its narrator decides she has given enough.
Anticipation was already building ahead of the release. BREAK EVEN surpassed 500,000 pre-saves on Spotify and topped the platform’s global Countdown chart. A live performance video of ‘You’re Under Arrest’, first unveiled at ILLIT’s Korean encore concerts on 17 and 18 October, also entered YouTube’s Daily Top Music Videos charts in 13 countries and regions, including the US, Japan, and the UK.
On ‘You’re Under Arrest’, the group turn romantic frustration into a playful guilty verdict: “Your habitual kindness is a crime.” The electro-pop track centres on a catchy hook and whistle motif, with choreography that incorporates chase-inspired movements, expressive acting, and gestures suggesting an arrest.
The accompanying video casts the members as secret agents pursuing the person who stirred up their feelings and disappeared. Disguises, quick manoeuvres, and detective work drive the chase, though their occasionally clumsy execution brings humour to the mission. Actor Song Kang makes a special appearance as a key figure in the pursuit, while the members move between sleek agent suits and detective outfits filtered through their signature “ILLIT-core” aesthetic.
The EP’s tracklist traces the feelings that lead to that confrontation and what comes after. Opening song ‘Super in Love’ combines atmospheric indie dance, gritty synth bass, and vocoder harmonies as doubts emerge about whether the affection was ever mutual. ‘More’ channels that uncertainty into frustration through speed garage, setting up the verdict delivered on ‘You’re Under Arrest’.
Baile funk closer ‘Pop’ offers a fresh start. With a new crush entering the picture, the group move beyond the relationship’s emotional stalemate, bringing the EP to a hopeful close.
