In MATTN’s world, dance music is all about connection

Across festival stages, club sets, and a steady stream of high-energy releases, the MATTN has built her world around impact: big hooks, bigger drops, and that all-important sense of release when a crowd gives itself over completely to the music. It is a style she has made distinctly her own, one that has kept her visible across the global dance circuit and helped cement her place in the wider mainstage universe.

Her music has long thrived in spaces built for scale and spectacle, but at its core there is still something simple driving it all: the rush of connection, the pull of emotion, and the need to make people feel something in the moment. It is that balance that has defined much of MATTN’s run so far. Best known for crowd-first dance records and a polished, high-impact performance style, she has spent the past several years carving out her own lane in EDM while continuing to evolve within it.

Bandwagon caught up with her to talk about recent releases, reworking an iconic hook, what still makes Tomorrowland feel magical, and much more.

Over the years, you’ve built a strong identity in the global EDM space. At this point in your career, what feels most different about MATTN today compared to when you first started out?

When I first started, everything was about proving myself and finding my sound. Now I feel much more confident creatively and personally. I’ve grown a lot as an artist and as a person, and that gives me the freedom to experiment more and trust my instincts. I still love the same energy and connection with the crowd, but now I approach music with more experience and perspective.

We really loved 'I Feel The Air'. How did that collaboration with DJs from Mars and Samuele Sartini come about?

Thank you! DJs from Mars and Samuele Sartini are artists I’ve respected for a long time. We connected through the scene and started exchanging ideas. The vibe clicked immediately, and 'I Feel The Air' came from that natural creative flow. Everyone brought their own flavour to the track, which made the collaboration really fun and energetic.

'Somebody’s Watching Me' plays with a famous Rockwell tune, particularly Michael Jackson’s chorus vocals. How did you and UUFO approach reimagining something so iconic?

When you work with a classic like that, you have to respect the original while bringing something fresh. UUFO and I wanted to keep that recognisable hook because it’s so iconic, but we built a modern dance production around it. The goal was to make it feel nostalgic but also powerful on today’s dance floors.

'Late Night' feels built for impact. What did you want fans to feel when that track drops?

Energy! 'Late Night' was really designed for those big festival or club moments when the crowd is fully locked in. I wanted it to feel like that moment when the night peaks — when everyone forgets about everything else and just lives in the music.

Your latest release 'With Every Heartbeat' is such an earworm. What was the creative process behind making this track with OLIVIA?

OLIVIA has such a beautiful and emotional voice, and from the moment we started working on the idea, we knew the track needed to feel uplifting but also heartfelt. We focused on creating a melody that would stay with people, something you can sing along to but still dance to. It came together very naturally in the studio.

Dance music keeps evolving so quickly. What excites you most about the scene right now, and what do you hope never changes?

What excites me is how open the scene is right now. Genres blend together more than ever, and artists feel free to experiment. At the same time, I hope the core feeling of dance music never changes — that sense of unity and connection on the dance floor.

You’ve been closely connected to Tomorrowland for a while now. For people who haven’t been, what makes Tomorrowland special?

Tomorrowland is really magical. The level of production, the storytelling, the people from all over the world coming together for music — it’s something you have to experience to fully understand. As an artist, playing there always feels like stepping into another world.

Outside of music, what has been inspiring you lately in a way that’s quietly feeding into your work?

Travel always inspires me. Seeing different cultures, meeting new people, and experiencing different cities and crowds brings fresh energy into my creativity. Even small moments can spark ideas for music.

Looking ahead, what are you challenging yourself to do next that you haven’t done yet?

I’m always pushing myself creatively. I want to keep evolving my sound and maybe explore some different styles while still keeping the MATTN energy. I’m also focusing a lot on making music that translates perfectly both in clubs and on big festival stages.

You’re headlining MARQUEE Singapore soon! What are your thoughts on playing there?

I’m super excited! MARQUEE Singapore is an incredible venue with amazing energy and a great crowd. I heard from my husband (Dimitri Vegas) how amazing the club is, so since then I’ve always wanted to play there. I can’t wait to bring a big set and make it a night to remember.

(UPDATE: MATTN's gig at MARQUEE Singapore has been cancelled as the artiste is unable to travel due to illness.)
