JAIE on finding balance and performing at Good Vibes Festival 2023

Estimated: 2 mins  reading

With groovy electronic beats and enchanting vocals, JAIE's music has a way of making you feel like you're floating among the clouds.

Since releasing her debut single in 2017, the Malaysian singer-songwriter has been known for creating soundscapes perfect for a chill night as she recounts stories of undefined relationships, intoxicating love, and better days. Through the years, JAIE has never failed to churn out a great tune and in just a couple of days, she's bringing those alluring melodies to the live stage.

This July, the 'Daylight' act is set to take over Kuala Lumpur's Good Vibes Festival, where she joins the likes of The 1975, The Strokes, Daniel Caesar, and Sabrina Carpenter, as well as regional favourites like Lunadira, lullaboy, ALYPH, and more. Ahead of her Good Vibes set, Bandwagon caught up with JAIE to talk about her festival preparations, her artistic growth, and what lies ahead.

What are your preparations for Good Vibes Festival looking like?

With my band, I’ve been preparing my setlist which includes some new songs I haven’t played before, so that will be fun. In general, nothing too crazy, I’m just making sure I stay healthy for the performance.

Do your preparations for a music festival differ from when preparing for a regular gig? In what ways?

I think it would mainly be tailoring a setlist and choosing songs that will fit the vibe.

What are you most looking forward to at Good Vibes? Are there any songs you’re particularly excited to bring on stage?

I’m really looking forward to experiencing a local festival back home again, and seeing my friends perform on stage. Definitely excited to play some songs I haven’t played before along with some oldies, might bring on a guest performer or two as well…

Having both attended and performed at festivals, what is your greatest festival tip?

You gotta scope out the grounds and know where the toilet with the shortest line is.

What do you enjoy most about performing live?

I love feeling the energy from the band and the audience. It brings a new life to the songs you might have put away for a while or moved on from.

You released your debut single in 2017, a lot has changed since then. How do you feel you’ve grown both as an artist and a person in that time?

As an artist, I think I’ve learned how to let the songwriting and production process flow without overthinking things. That’s helped me save a lot of time taken to get from the starting to finish point of each song. As a person, well I think we’ve all grown over the crazy past few years… I shifted my priorities in life and appreciate finding a balance in it all.

What is most important to you when making music?

Enjoying the process and being open to new ideas and feedback from others.

Is there anything new you’re working on that people can look out for?

I have a new single coming out really soon and I’m actually going to play it live at Good Vibes which will be really fun. It’s a bit different from other stuff I’ve put out so I’m super excited to share it.
