Singapore's wind band community is set for a landmark moment this July as Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra makes its long-awaited Singapore debut as the headline act of the 10th Singapore International Band Festival (SIBF). Organised by the Wind Bands Association of Singapore (WBAS), the biennial festival returns from 21–26 July, bringing together international performances, educational programmes, competitions, and cultural exchange to celebrate its 10th edition.

Founded in 1923, Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra is Japan's oldest professional symphonic wind orchestra. Renowned for its century-long legacy, the ensemble has earned international acclaim for its versatility across classical repertoire, contemporary compositions, and popular music arrangements. Performances outside Japan remain rare, making its first-ever appearance in Singapore a significant occasion for audiences and musicians alike.

The orchestra will perform two contrasting concerts at the NUS University Cultural Centre (UCC), offering audiences a showcase of both traditional and contemporary Japanese wind music.

The first, Japanese Masterworks, takes place on 24 July and highlights Japan's rich wind band tradition through a programme of acclaimed classical repertoire. The following evening, Popstage – New Sounds in Brass Feature shifts gears with symphonic arrangements from Japan's iconic New Sounds in Brass series, featuring beloved J-pop, anime, and video game music that has inspired generations of wind musicians around the world. Together, the two performances offer a rare opportunity to experience the full breadth of one of Japan's most celebrated wind orchestras.

Beyond the gala concerts, this year's festival will also feature international band competitions, educational workshops, masterclasses, and the inaugural SIBF Symposium, welcoming musicians, educators, and ensembles from Singapore and overseas. The symposium, running from 23–26 July, aims to foster learning and collaboration through sessions led by renowned conductors, composers, and music educators.

Speaking on this year's milestone edition, Wind Bands Association of Singapore President ME6 Philip Tng said the festival celebrates not only music, but also friendship, education, and cultural exchange. He added that WBAS is honoured to welcome the Singapore debut of Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra alongside the launch of the inaugural SIBF Symposium, with hopes of inspiring excellence and nurturing the next generation of wind band musicians.

Since its launch, the Singapore International Band Festival has grown into one of the region's leading platforms for wind band performance and education, connecting local ensembles with internationally recognised artists while strengthening cultural exchange through music.
