OPM R&B icon Jay R is sparking conversation across the Filipino music scene, weighing in on ongoing concerns about artist exploitation—just as his new film Songs For Selina prepares to hit cinemas.

The veteran singer recently addressed the controversy involving rising artist MRLD and her departure from OC Records, which has ignited discussions around unfair compensation, lack of support, and transparency in the industry. In a TikTok video that has since racked up over a million combined views, Jay R shared candid insights drawn from his own decades-long career.

I’ve been in this industry for more than 20 years, and situations like this really do happen to artists,” he said, pointing out how young musicians often sign contracts without fully understanding their terms.

He stressed the importance of legal awareness, urging emerging artists to protect themselves before entering any agreements. “You should have a lawyer and review everything line by line. You need to understand exactly what you’re getting into,” he added.

The conversation doesn’t stop online. During the press conference for his upcoming film, Jay R expanded on these realities—highlighting how fear of being sidelined or blacklisted often keeps artists from speaking up.
