JO1 are breaking free with ANIMAL.
Released on 2 October, the Japanese boy group’s first full English-language EP also marks their official US debut project. GRAMMY-winning producer and songwriter Dem Jointz produced all six tracks, which explore freedom, individuality, and moving beyond expectations.
Member Takumi Kawanishi co-composed the title track, ‘ANIMAL’, a high-energy dance number about letting out the side of yourself you usually keep hidden. Fans previously got a preview of the song at KCON LA and ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL ahead of its release.
The accompanying music video takes that idea literally, following JO1 as they escape a “cage” and venture into an unpredictable world. It culminates in a large-scale performance sequence with 30 dancers joining the group.
The EP’s release coincided with the start of JO1’s North American tour stop at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall. The five-date run also takes in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco before wrapping up on 11 October at The Novo in Los Angeles.
