KATSEYE is back with the surprise drop of ‘Internet Girl,’ bringing the group’s signature sass and iconic lyrics tenfold.
The hyperpop track is an ode to the group's rapid rise into stardom, with their one-of-a-kind sound that sets them apart from the music that dominates the K-pop scene in this day and age. Their distinct writing style can be most apparently seen in the smash hit ‘Gnarly’ that fused impactful beats with short and sweet lyrics like, “Boba tea (gnarly), Tesla (gnarly), fried chicken (gnarly), partyin' in the Hollywood Hills (uh-huh), this song (gnarly), oh, my god, that new beat...” that were catchy and easy to sing along to.
With ‘Internet Girl’, KATSEYE takes a similar approach with simple lyrics bound to replay in your head long after listening to the track for the first time, with lines like, “Haven't you heard? I'm the internet girl, every picture of me is ‘Oh my God, it's her’, what's the word? what's the word? I’m the internet girl, got your screen so hot, oh, you better take a screenshot”.
In an interview with BBC, the group explains the experiences they've had as Katseye that may have inspired the song as they share, “...Being in a girl group, people see us as women to rank, which is so bizarre to me. We even get graded sometimes on the internet. To me, that feels dystopian. It’s an interesting concept to build a song around, and it resonates with us deeply, but it can also be universal, since people are constantly being compared, and women are constantly being pitted against each other.”
However, despite the strong message fueling the fiery arrogance and attitude of the high-octane track, fans have expressed their distaste for the song online. Some fans chimed in, sharing, “the production is actually really well done and interesting idk why they’re repeating eat zucchini tho”. Much of the backlash stems from the repeated lyric ‘Eat zucchini,’ which some fans felt was poorly thought out. Confusion also arose when the line ‘I'm getting out of here,’ originally sung by member Megan, was delivered in a baby voice in the final release, leaving fans thrown off.

Despite fan impressions of the track, the song has broken the charts as it debuted at #13 on the Global Spotify chart with nearly three million streams. While reactions to ‘Internet Girl’ have been mixed, KATSEYE’s bold self-written track has undeniably made an impact, showcasing the group’s fearless approach to music and storytelling. Balancing catchy hyperpop hooks with a message about the pressures of online culture, the song proves that KATSEYE isn’t afraid to push boundaries.
