Katy Perry embraces the 80's sound in Witness Tour Manila

Katy Perry returned to Manila earlier this week, April 2nd, for the Philippine leg of her Witness Tour. The evening was completely fraught with excitement as her fans who call themselves the "Katy Cats" were in line at the venue even while the sun was still out.

Not holding back the theatrics, Perry started her concert with a bang. She opened the evening with the song ‘Witness' with the most mesmerizing set and light design. The concert was visually compelling with the exciting costume changes, shifting and dynamic set design matched with beautiful lighting, and inventive LED backing.

Even with its high production value, Perry did not miss the chance to connect with her fans. By the end of the evening, she’s managed to learn Tagalog phrases such “Mahal kita” (I love you), “Tumahimik ka” (be quiet), and “Masaya ako na andito ako (I’m happy to be here). She also learned the Tagalog words for one of her hit songs which were, “Mainit” (Hot) and “Malamig” (cold). At one point, she invited a young male fan on stage to have a small chat wherein the entire MOA Arena learned that he was about to graduate college the next day. Best graduation gift ever!

The true highlight of the evening came in hearing new versions of her older chart-toppers. 'Teenage Dream' and 'Hot n Cold' were given the 80's pop treatment with the decade’s signature drum machine and synths. ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and ‘E.T.’, on the other hand, went glam rock with its guitar-driven and drum-heavy arrangement.
