kiOra took their first step onto the international stage with an opening performance at CENTRAL MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT FESTIVAL in Kuala Lumpur on 1 August.
Performing at Zepp Kuala Lumpur, the four-member Japanese girl group appeared before a Malaysian audience for their first-ever show outside Japan. The set marked a major milestone for kiOra as they introduced their music and self-described “Tokyo Hyper City Pop” sound to fans overseas.
The group performed their debut single, 'Coco', with the crowd’s cheers leaving a strong impression on the members.
“Getting to perform kiOra’s first song 'Coco' and sing it together with everyone was amazing! Jom jumpa lagi!” OTO shared after the show.
KYLA added, “Thank you to everyone who came today! It was the best. The 'Coco' MV is coming out soon, so please get ready to watch and rewatch! Can’t wait to meet again.”
RUKA also reflected on the audience’s response, saying, “I was so happy to hear your cheers during our first overseas performance. I hope we can sing 'Coco' together again!”
YU shared, “I was energized by today’s CENTRAL performance. I’ll keep doing my best to share our first single 'Coco' with even more people around the world!”
The Kuala Lumpur appearance followed kiOra’s unveiling at HEAD IN THE CLOUDS Tokyo, where the group first introduced its blend of hyperpop and city pop influences.
During their CENTRAL appearance, kiOra also announced that the official music video for 'Coco' will premiere worldwide on 8 August, alongside the single’s digital release.
'Coco' draws its title from the phrase “in my core” and the Japanese words “ima coco”, meaning “here and now”. The track centres on embracing one’s present self and finding the courage to move forward before feeling fully ready.
The single was created with producers and songwriters her0ism, Yaeji, Mechatok and Kanata Okajima, with Chelsea Warner joining the songwriting team. Recording took place at StudioBeat3, while vocal production was handled by Ashley Alish.
