The 2025 MAMA Awards pressed on in Hong Kong on 28 and 29 November despite the city still reeling from the Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po. Organisers confirmed the show would proceed with a “restrained production” out of respect for the tragedy, cancelling the red carpet event, scaling back elements of the ceremony, and opening with a moment of silence for the victims.

CJ ENM expressed condolences and pledged donations to help affected families. Several Hong Kong personalities, including MIRROR as well as Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-fat, withdrew from attending.

Even with the scaled-down staging, the ceremony delivered a full slate of top honours. G-Dragon was named Artist of the Year, while ROSÉ and Bruno Mars won Song of the Year for 'APT'. Stray Kids clinched Album of the Year for KARMA, and ENHYPEN took VISA Fans’ Choice of the Year.

The four major Daesangs were accompanied by key artist awards across the field. ROSÉ won Best Female Artist, and G-Dragon also secured Best Male Artist, marking a dominant night for both. In the group categories, SEVENTEEN won Best Male Group, while aespa earned Best Female Group and delivered one of the night’s most notable performance victories with Best Dance Performance (Female Group) for Whiplash.

Performance and genre awards were equally competitive. G-Dragon took Best Dance Performance (Male Solo) for 'TOO BAD (feat. Anderson .Paak)', while JENNIE won Best Dance Performance (Female Solo) for 'like JENNIE'. ROSÉ added another major trophy with Best Vocal Performance (Solo) for 'toxic till the end', and DAVICHI earned Best Vocal Performance (Group) for 'Stitching'.

In the rap and hip-hop category, Big Naughty took home Best Rap & Hip Hop Performance for 'MUSIC (feat. Lee Chanhyuk)', while DAY6 won Best Band Performance for 'Maybe Tomorrow'. In collaboration honours, ROSÉ and Bruno Mars’ 'APT'. continued its sweep with the Best Collaboration award.

New talent also made a strong showing, with CORTIS and Hearts2Hearts jointly winning Best New Artist. Several acts stood out in the popularity-based awards as well, including IVE, who claimed both Favorite Global Performer and Favourite Female Group, while BOYNEXTDOOR won Favourite Male Group.

The ceremony was not without incident. During the second night, Stray Kids’ Lee Know sustained an ankle injury during the group’s performance. According to his agency, he received immediate on-site treatment and was later diagnosed with an ankle sprain after further medical examination in Korea. JYP Entertainment stated he would focus on treatment and rest.

This year’s MAMA Awards unfolded with a noticeably subdued tone, shaped by the ongoing grief in Hong Kong. Organisers and artists alike acknowledged the tragedy, turning the event into a respectful, measured tribute to the year’s achievements in music.

While markedly different from MAMA’s typically grand scale, the 2025 edition still spotlighted the artists, performances and creative work that defined the year — proving that even in difficult moments, the industry remains resilient and united.
