The complex lyrics intertwine with the haunting and rich rock texture created by the live band and orchestra. With lines such as, “Where did it go, where’s my phone, where’s my phone, where did I leave, where’d I go, where’d I go,” depicting a sense of paranoia and anxiety.
Directed by Noel Paul, the video is inspired by Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle, filmed in a playful, unique style. Drawing on the overall eerie nature of the track, the music video, which seems to be set in Victorian times, follows Mitski as she desperately tries to protect a young woman from the threats that lay outside of their quaint gothic-style home. Mitski vehemently protects her sister from mysterious and uncanny visitors, even as an older woman in the home tries to hold her back. Ordinary moments spiral into bizarre and chaotic encounters, creating a darkly whimsical tale of devotion, tension, and eerie mischief.
Nothing’s About to Happen to Me was entirely written and performed by Mitski and produced by Patrick Hyland. With the release of 'Where's My Phone', she gives fans a sneak peek into what’s coming next in the 10 remaining tracks that her eighth studio album entails. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming album, and keep your eyes peeled for updates on Mitski's plans to visit Singapore soon!
