Moonstar88 drops NFT-incorporated 'Lourdes 2088', new album in ten years – listen

ICYMI, Filipino rock band Moonstar88 has dropped their first album in ten years. Lourdes 2088 was made available across all streaming platforms on Friday, 27 January 2023. Its vinyl is also now available for pre-order via The Grey Market Records and Backspacer Records.

Seemingly the first of its kind in the country, Lourdes 2088 is a "mixed-reality album" that combines one's musical experience with web3. This aligns with the album's theme of "a terrestrial future (year 2088) where inventions go beyond the realm of science, a world where all heartaches have solutions in order for people to adapt.”

Each purple-colored vinyl record comes with a set of trading cards created by Nelz Yumul of weewilldoodle) that represent each track, alluding to a certain invention that helps people through emotional breakdowns brought about by heartbreak: the PusoCal (BreakUp Scheduler), ReEMO (Emotional Baggage Recycle Bin and Editor), Freezer (Cryogenic emotional stasis headwear), and more.

With the help of web 3.0 agency GIGIL Metama, the band is also releasing a limited Future Edition record of the album where the vinyl owner is provided access to unique web 3.0 experiences and exclusive Moonstar88 content and perks.

“As a band, as much as we’re passionate about music, we’ve always been agile with how we can reach out to our fans and listeners," vocalist Maysh Baay explains. “The band started from the cassette era to CD to streaming/social media and now web3 and a somewhat full circle path to physicals (vinyl and trading cards) (...) It’s exciting how technology makes that possible for music plus we are so lucky to have the best producers and collaborators for Lourdes 2088."

A collaborative effort, the album is produced by Raymund Marasigan and Buddy Zabala (also of Eraserheads fame), and was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Shinji Tanaka (of Squid9) at Kodama Studio.

Moonstar88’s special edition purple-colored vinyl costs PHP 2,100, while their limited Future Edition vinly costs PHP 3,000. Pre-order their vinyl here.
