Netflix confirms Squid Game's renewal for season 2

Netflix has confirmed that Squid Game will return for a second season.

It certainly comes as no surprise that the popular Korean thriller has been green-lit for a follow-up season since it became the streaming platform’s most-viewed television series worldwide.

The breakout series follows 456 participants who are expected to compete in deadly children’s games; not just for their survival but also to win a cash prize of roughly $40 million.

At the end of season one, the main protagonist Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) turned back instead of getting on the plane to the States as he intended—this was perhaps creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s way of signalling that there was more to come.

Netflix chief content officer and co-CEO Ted Sarandos also stated: “The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

Lead actor Lee Jung-jae will be reprising his role but that’s about all that has been said for now.

Squid Game has made history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards as the first non-English language series and first Korean series to score several nominations.

Additionally, the series has also won three Golden Globe Awards, a Gotham Award for breakthrough series, and nabbed three Critics Choice Awards nominations.
