Playing Filipino music will soon be everywhere locally.
On 29 November (Monday), voting 179-0-0, the chamber approved the House Bill No. 10305 that mandates that playlists of inbound international flights and tourist buses would consist of 50% Filipino songs, while hotels, resorts, and restaurants, must play at least 25% of Filipino music on their playlists.
The bill aims to promote nationalism and spotlight "any musical composition, whether purely instrumental or with lyrics, which has been originally composed, written, arranged, performed or played by Filipinos." It aims to attract more tourists to return to the Philippines.
"It is going to be a very effective way to promote the Filipino culture, tradition, values, and our real character as a people," Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza said.
The bill will be sent to the Senate for approval. The Department of Tourism (DOT) will be delivering the rules and regulations 60 days after it is passed into law.
According to the bill, airline companies that fail to play the required music as its aircrafts land in the country face a PHP 300,000 fine. Bus operators will pay PHP 50,000 for every offense, while the fine for hotels, restaurants, and resorts is PHP 20,000 for every offense.
