5 up-and-coming Filipino artists who deserve a listen – Dilaw, Muri, Aloura, Amiel Aban, Sam Akins

It's safe to say that we've settled quite well into 2022.

Fresh-faced artists are ready to burst through the doors of their bedrooms and make their mark on the live stage. With the re-opening of venues, seasoned musicians have already warmed their spots for them. The scene's real-world revival is here and audiences are ready to have their minds blown again.

Here are five up-and-coming Filipino artists you should check out:

Aloura

BANDWAGON TV

Manila-based singer, songwriter, and producer Aloura first emerged in the scene as MRKIII. After winning 1st runner up in DJ Mag Philippines' Spin U-Nite DJ competition, she is now ready to show her true colours through melodic-driven, synth-pop tunes and blend different genres to her will.

Aloura is set to release new music this year.

Amiel Aban

From performing at workshops and leading worship in church, Quezon City local Amiel Aban is ready to deliver his brand of alternative pop music to the reawakening scene. He turns to the music of John Mayer, The 1975, Charlie Puth, and Nightly for inspiration and now writes his own tunes in an effort to let people know they are not alone in life.

The singer-songwriter is ecstatic about the comeback of live shows, the music he has yet to write, produce, and release, and the collaborations he'll work on this 2022.

Dilaw

Fusing together the sounds of alternative and indie rock, Baguio-based act Dilaw are out to spark flames with their powerful lyrics and catchy melodies.

The humble beginnings of the project started with rap until Vie dela Rosa came into the picture. Since then, they've grown musically, writing songs wherever and whenever inspiration strikes. The themes of their songs range from socio-political messages to matters of the heart, empowering listeners from the get-go.

This year, they look forward to making their mark in the local music scene, releasing fresh tunes, and spreading their message.

Muri

From performing on the stages across the Philippines to sharing her stories along the streets of Paris, Muri continues her journey of self-exploration and introspection. The Ransom Collective's violinist has paved a path of her own through soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics, borrowing inspiration from FKJ, Florence and the Machine, Tom Misch, Masego, Billie Holiday, and Louie Armstrong.

Muri will continue telling her story through performances, collaborations, and a new website this 2022.

Sam Akins

When the choir needed soprano singers, at the age of 10, Sam Akins stepped in to fill the missing spot. The Dumaguete-based singer-songwriter has been doing music since, heavily influenced by Gospel, pop, R&B, hip-hop, and musical theatre, and drawing inspiration from the vocal stylings of Kirk Franklin, J. Cole, Ed Sheeran, and John Legend.

Winning Best Song and Best Interpretation at Silliman University's annual Valentine songwriting competition for 'Backwards' in 2019 was only the beginning for Akins. In 2022, he's out to explore and incorporate different styles to create his own brand of music and write for other artists.
