Paul Pablo on making "hugotronic" music, being heard, and his latest single 'Di Inakala'

If you ever wanted to get in your feels but still dance your heart out, Paul Pablo might just be the artist for you. The Filipino singer-songwriter has a knack for seamlessly putting together the polar opposite worlds of sentimental, love-struck lyrics and groovy beats as if they were always meant to be.

Whether it's finding your identity against the backdrop of dreamy electro-pop, or navigating the real world to the sounds of retro disco melodies, the 'Bangin' act makes sure that you're going through life (and its not-so-nice moments) with music that'll keep you dancing.

"My music is a combination of hugot lyrics and electronic pop sound which we named as “hugotronic”. I also write and explore other styles of writing and sound which my listeners should watch out for the years to come," Paul tells Bandwagon

As the latest addition to young artist's "hugotronic" music, he dropped 'Di Inakala', a sentimental track all about finding your person.

Following the release, Bandwagon caught up with the young act to talk about his musical beginnings, the stories that make up his music, and what's next.

Hi Paul! How’s life been treating you these days?

Life is putting me through a series of ups and downs. It gave me wild opportunities, but while I was taking it I was also facing some minor challenges with my health. I wasn’t feeling well, my sinusitis got acute and it affected my singing. But, I didn’t want to miss these chances to prove myself, that’s why I gotta fight.

So far, I am happy with my life. I know I am facing these situations so I can be tougher and be ready for bigger things that life has to bring.

Let’s start from the beginning, how did your interest in music first start? When and how did you know that music was something that you wanted to pursue?

I’ve always been interested in music since I was still a kid. I often listen to different genres that my family listens to. Over time I developed my own taste and it grew to dominate my senses. I am a fan of incorporating music with visuals, and other forms aside from hearing. Music is an experience not limited to hearing.

Walk us through the story behind your latest single ‘Di Inakala’. What was the process like working on the track?

As a person who’s never been in a romantic relationship so far, people might question how I was able to write something like this song. Well, I’ve been in love before, and I imagined myself being in a situation where that person that I’ve been longing to be with is finally someone I could call mine. I wrote the words that popped out to my mind, and there I was able to create 'Di Inakala'.

Both in and out of your music, you’re a big advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. How do your advocacies play a part in the music you make?

My music is for every gender, including straight people. I want it to be as neutral as possible so everyone can put themselves into the song or use it as how they want to.

But, when opportunities come and as one of the lucky people given this platform, I wanted to use it without hiding my gender identity. I want to show people that even if I’m gay, I was able to make a career in music, I am seen and heard and therefore they can be too.

What message do you hope to share with your listeners through your music?

It depends on what I write about, as long as I get to speak the truth about how I see things in the world through my music I know it will inspire my listeners. It may be about love, dreams, life, ugly experiences, or healing… anything that a living person can relate to.

You relay a lot of your personal stories about finding your identity through your songs. What has it been like navigating your own journey through music and now sharing that with the world?

It feels surreal. Before I only got to share and talk about my music with my friends and my family. Now, I can talk about my music to a lot of amazing people including the people who believe that my music is the future, that our generation can still bring out something new. I am a fan of creating new things and that is what I am trying to do with my music life.

Share with us what we can expect from you for the rest of the year.

I also don’t know what will happen yet, but one thing is expected, I will always give my best and bring the best music we can make for your ears, mind, soul, and heart to enjoy.
