Sony is taking video production to a whole other level with Crystal LED.

At the Virtual Production Lab in Japan, Sony Innovation Studios has reinvented sets and locations for film and TV productions with its latest technology that captures 3D volumetric point cloud data. The studio's innovative "Atom View" software delivers high-quality background images on a Crystal LED display used for real-time production environments, expanding the capacities of a creator's vision.

Virtual production created with the Sony's Crystal LED displays is paired with 4K cinema camera tracking and a real-time rendering engine workflow. It will be able to combine graphics and live action without the need of post-processing.

"Creators don't want to see images that have already been seen by someone else. Generally, they always strive to make something people have never seen before, or things never experienced before, and I believe this technology will be a great tool for empowering such creators," Masaki Nakayama of Sony Innovation Studios shares in a statement.

"I believe that virtual production technology will become commonplace soon,” says Daisuke Kobayashi, Visual Innovation Office, Sony PCL Inc., in a statement. "We built this Virtual Production Lab because we thought it was necessary to take on the challenge of creating new visual expressions along with creators with the high quality of Hollywood’s virtual production systems."

The permanent studio in Kiyosumi Shirakawa BASE opens on 1 February 2022 and will be used to shoot a music video with Japanese idol group SixTONES1.

UPDATE (02/03): The new music video for SixTONES' '共鳴' just dropped, giving the world a glimpse of the possibilities of Sony's Virtual Production Lab.
