Soundwave on sharing their love through music: "Our story is like a throwback to when we first met and how we fell in love"

There's nothing like the magic that two people in love create. In the case of Soundwave, the Indonesian electronic duo spin notes to turn into golden tracks that tell the stories of their life, their love, and their beautiful world together.

Following the recent release of their single 'Sing and Dance With Me', Jevin Julian and Rinni Wulandari have another story to tell with their upcoming album RE/SET. They've been through so much as musicians and as a couple, and are ready to turn another page with a little 1-2 step toward their next chapter.

Bandwagon caught up with Jevin to talk about Soundwave, creating music together as husband and wife, and writing their new record RE/SET.

Let's talk a bit about 'Sing and Dance With Me' and the creative process behind it.

We made this song five years ago. Rinni was pregnant then, and the song just came up randomly when we were having fun in the studio. Five years later, the song is released. It's been a fun journey and definitely a fun song, and we love that we’ve made this all on our own. That includes the accompanying music video that was in our home living room which we did on our own. And turns out we’re so happy with the result!

We're very excited about what you have in store with RE/SET. What kind of stories do you want to tell with your upcoming album?

We made RE/SET during the pandemic. This couldn’t have come at a better time as the pandemic has given us the opportunity to slow down and work on our own music projects as individual artists, and working together as Soundwave.

For us, we love the feeling of owning it, and the empowerment that comes with making our own music. This is especially so for when we were working together on this upcoming album. Part of it is being proud of how far we have come as musicians and a couple, but it’s also being able to tell this story of us when we started at a music competition and look where we are now. Our story is like a throwback to the memory of when we first met and how we ended up falling in love.

Where are you now in making this album come to life?

The album is done and we're working so hard to make everything perfect in this situation. We can’t wait for all of you to have a listen to the album when it’s released in August this year.

Tell us, what's it like to have an amazing project like this between husband and wife?

We were working together as music professionals before we were in a relationship and now we are married, so there's no difference. In fact, it's easier now because we live under the same roof. To be able to be so comfortable with one another as to settle down, but also to bounce off creative ideas and produce music together, nothing beats that.

In what ways do the music you enjoy listening to together influence your sound?

We listen to different kinds of music but when it came to deciding what exactly is to the sound of Soundwave, electronic dance music is what we wanted to make. We explored that with every form from Chillpop, feel-good beats, EDM to K-pop to name a few. We wanted the album to be bolder than ever, to shed away from our previously released singles and to come back stronger than before. And that’s what RE/SET is all about.

What are your plans for Soundwave this year?

Our album is out in August this year. We are being hopeful, but we would really love to be able to perform the new album live in front of our audience.
