The Weeknd paid tribute to Hong Kong through one of its most beloved voices.

Opening his four-show run at Kai Tak Stadium on 24 October, the Canadian singer unveiled ‘Hong Kong’, an unreleased track that samples Faye Wong’s 1993 Cantopop classic ‘季候風’, also known as ‘Seasonal Wind’ or ‘Monsoon’. The surprise debut formed part of his After Hours Til Dawn Tour.

Built around Wong’s melancholic ballad, the song brings her Cantonese vocals into The Weeknd’s moody R&B world. Written with the city in mind, it gives his appreciation for Hong Kong culture a musical expression, drawing on a recording familiar to generations of local listeners.

The tribute extended to the stadium screens, where a specially created visual accompanied the performance. Victoria Harbour’s skyline and a traditional red-sailed junk appeared alongside red taxis, neon signs in Mong Kok, dim sum restaurants, and roasted chestnut hawkers. Other recognisable locations included Causeway Bay’s circular footbridge, the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, and The Peninsula.

Together, the sample and imagery prompted an emotional response from fans, both inside the stadium and online after The Weeknd shared footage on Instagram. Viewers praised the attention to the city’s everyday details, with some reflecting on the nostalgia stirred by its streetscapes and familiar sounds.

The Hong Kong run spans 24, 25, 30 and 31 October, with two more performances at Kai Tak Stadium still to come.
