Once seen as a potential Spotify killer, TikTok has confirmed it will shut down its subscription-based music service, TikTok Music, worldwide on 28 November. This affects the 5 regions where the app is available: Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico.
The shutdown reflects TikTok’s shift in strategy, focusing on its "Add To Music App" feature, which lets users save tracks from TikTok to their preferred music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. This move aligns with TikTok’s goal of boosting music consumption on external platforms rather than competing with them directly.
Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, stated, “We will be closing TikTok Music to further our role in driving music listening and value on streaming services.”
TikTok Music launched in Indonesia and Brazil last summer, expanding to Australia, Singapore, and Mexico in October 2023. Despite some early licensing challenges, TikTok will now focus on strengthening its partnerships with external music streaming platforms.
