Singapore is heading to the Oscars with Anthony Chen once again.
The Singaporean filmmaker’s We Are All Strangers (我们不是陌生人) has officially been selected as Singapore’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. The film was selected and submitted by a committee comprising eligible members of the Singapore Film Commission Advisory Committee.
Produced by Giraffe Pictures, We Are All Strangers is the closing chapter of Chen’s Growing Up trilogy. It also marks the third film from the director to represent Singapore at the Academy Awards, following Ilo Ilo and Wet Season.
Speaking about the selection, Chen called the submission “a real honour,” adding that having all three films from the trilogy selected to represent Singapore was a special milestone for the cast and crew.
“These stories belong to Singapore, and presenting this final chapter of the trilogy on the global stage is a privilege for me as a filmmaker,” he shared.
We Are All Strangers has already made its way around the international film festival circuit. The film had its world premiere in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival before opening the Hong Kong International Film Festival and receiving a Special Mention at the Far East Film Festival Udine.
Yeo Yann Yann, who stars as Bee Hwa, was also nominated for Best Performance at the 19th Asia Pacific Screen Awards for her role in the film.
Next up, We Are All Strangers will make its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 15 September, followed by appearances at festivals in Bangkok on 24 September and Vancouver from 3 to 7 October. It is also set to compete in the Official Section of the Valladolid International Film Festival in Spain at the end of October.
Following its Singapore theatrical release on 20 August, We Are All Strangers is currently screening at cinemas across the island, with a Malaysian release scheduled for 22 October.
