Rock legend Hanafie Warren marks his comeback with the release and a full live showcase of his ninth full-length studio album, Riwayatku.
A name synonymous with the local Malay music scene, Hanafie rose to prominence in the 1980s as the lead singer and songwriter of rock band The Unwanted and as a member of rock band Hangloose, a project helmed by prolific composer and cultural medallion winner Iskandar Mirza Ismail.
He then went solo in 1986, with his debut album, ‘Terperangkap Dalam Sinaran’, receiving tremendous response and winning him a Goldies Award in the process. His influence grew throughout the 80s and 90s, snagging him notable performances region wide, as well as televised performances on shows such as ‘Rock Opera’ and Mediacorp/RTM’s ‘Muzika Ekstravaganza’.
Fresh from his hiatus, Hanafie's musical evolution shines through in Riwayatku (Album).
The record features lyrical themes of freedom, rebellion, and fortitude present in modern society, and is a departure from the ballad-driven repertoire of preceding releases - heralding a heavier, darker, modern and more progressive soundscape. Hanafie's new repertiore switches between his signature soaring ballads to tracks boasting modern influences and bolder arrangements.
With 65,000 record sales and over 50 live performances to his name, Hanafie is set to turn heads once more as he takes the stage, performing his new album in its entirety, this 23 December at the Esplanade Recital Studio, with a new brand, new cutting-edge concept, new line-up, and a new modern sound.
