ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ian is a gifted pianist, song writer, comedian, broadcaster and record producer, but his greatest gift of all is as a jazz singer - one of the most distinctive, original and creative jazz singers that the UK has produced and indeed he has been cited, along with Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling, as one of the world’s finest male jazz vocalists.
His earlier UK recordings include three on the Ronnie Scott’s Jazzhouse record label. On the strength of these Shaw was signed to the Milestone label for whom his first release was a co-billing with piano legend Cedar Walton (In A New York Minute - 1999). This was followed up by Soho Stories, again with Cedar Walton. A World Still Turning (recorded at the famous Avatar Studio in 2003) had guests including pianist Billy Childs and featured a duet with Shaw’s mentor, Mark Murphy.
Shaw’s acclaimed 2006 album Drawn To All Things – The Songs of Joni Mitchell saw him “Praised far and wide as the single greatest male jazz vocalist the UK has to offer” by Jazz Times (USA).
Ian’s 2012 album, A Ghost In Every Bar, inspired Jazz Times to report: “The Welsh vocalist remains the gentlest of troubadours and most nakedly magical of storytellers”.
Ian currently hosts the weekly Ronnie Scott’s Radio Show, broadcast on the UK’s Jazz FM and stations in Canada ,US and in-flight on British Airways.
