Since 2001, his label Soundway has been uncovering and compiling rare, unreleased and limited edition music from Ghana, Nigeria, Colombia, Benin, Panama and Thailand and the Caribbean, including the quintessential Ghana Soundz and Nigeria Special afrobeat & afro-fusion compilations in the label’s early years. As well as uncovering and discovering old music he has been involved in remixing and editing as one half of Los Hermanos Latinos (with Quantic) and Hide and Smile (With Frankie Francis of sofrito). More recently, Soundway has been releasing albums by a string of contemporary acts that are forging a new global progressive style that can no longer lazily be termed ‘World Music’, including acclaimed acts such as Ibibio Sound machine from Nigeria, Batida from Portugal, Fantasma (Spoek Mathambo’s all-star band) from South Africa, The Busy Twist from the UK, Chico Mann from NYC and many more. In the last 6 years Cleret and Soundway have been running regular underground Soundway party events in unique venues across the east end of London. Miles' recent gigs have included the Glastonbury festival, Roskilde festival (Denmark), Petit Bain Paris, Sofrito UK (Regular guest), Notting Hill Carnival (London, UK), Teatro Festival (Amsterdam), Turntables on the Hudson (NYC), Womad Festival, Montreal, Jelly Jazz (UK), Supporting Seun Kuti and the Africa 70 (Brighton, UK), Bol De Funk (Marseille), La Santanera (Mexico - with Nickodemus and Quantic), Chicago World Music festival, Womad UK. ------- > VIK SOHONIE (Ostinato Records, NYC) Vik was born in India and grew up in the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore. A passionate music explorer from a very young age, he began collecting records at age 12. After immersing himself in the global revival of rare and obscure rhythms of the Black Atlantic, thanks in part to the phenomenal work of Miles Cleret's Soundway Records, he left his job at a news agency to join award-winning German record label Analog Africa, where he worked as a lead researcher, writer, and editor for the liner notes of multiple compilations, including "Angola Soundtrack," awarded the Germans Critics Prize, and "Diablos del Ritmo: The Colombian Melting Pot," and helped compile "Afrobeat Airways Vol 2: Return Flight to Ghana," a collection of unreleased funk gems from the West African country. Vik recently established his own record label, Ostinato Records. After extensive digging in Haiti and Brooklyn, Ostinato's debut compilation, "Tanbou Toujou Lou: Meringue, Kompa Kreyol, and Electric Folklore from Haiti 1960 - 1976", a collection of rarities and classics from the country's golden music era, is due later this year. Currently based in New York, Vik spins his collection of rare vinyl regularly across the city. He has performed with Rich Medina, Nickodemus, Monk One, and the Names You Can Trust soundsystem in New York, and has also DJ'd in Boston, Montreal, Frankfurt, Mumbai, and Bangkok. His dance floor selections focus particularly on the 1970's rhythms of Lusophone Africa -- Angola, Guinea Bissau, and Cape Verde -- because, he believes, these sounds are particularly beautiful since most of the recordings took place during wars of independence, adding a special layer of infectious emotional complexity. --- $15 LIMITED ADVANCE TICKETS https://www.eventbrite.sg/e/tropical-explosion-featuring-miles-cleret-and-vik-sohonie-tickets-17068512380
