BIGBANG make triumphant US return with 'XX : COSMOS' concerts in Oakland — gig report

Nearly a decade since their last concerts in the United States, BIGBANG made their long-awaited return with two nights at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Taking place on 4 and 5 September, the shows reunited G-DRAGON, TAEYANG, and DAESUNG with V.I.P.s for a celebration that looked back on almost two decades of BIGBANG while making a convincing case for the trio's place in K-pop today.

“Reaching our 20th year is like a miracle and blessing,” TAEYANG told the crowd.

Built around a “Cosmos” theme, the concert matched its stadium scale with a 31-song set, a four-piece live band led by producer and composer Wow Jones, 20 dancers, pyrotechnics, confetti, and a massive mobile LED structure filled with images of planets and constellations.

Yet BIGBANG's catalogue remained the biggest spectacle. The opening run of 'Fantastic Baby', 'Hands Up', and 'Tonight' immediately tapped into the group's hit-making history, while 'If You', 'Bad Boy', 'Bae Bae', and 'Haru Haru' offered reminders of their softer side.

Each member also received space to show the individual identities that have long existed alongside BIGBANG. DAESUNG moved from 'Universe' and 'Wings' into the playful trot of 'Hando Chogua' and 'Look at Me Gwisun'. TAEYANG leaned into his R&B roots with 'Bad', 'Ringa Linga', and 'Live Fast Die Slow', while G-DRAGON commanded the stadium with 'Power', 'Crayon', and 'Crooked'.

When the trio came back together, the energy shifted again. 'Bang Bang Bang', 'Sober', and 'We Like 2 Party' turned the Coliseum into a celebration, joined by comeback track 'Biiig' and 'Home Sweet Home'.

The encore reached further into BIGBANG's history with 'My Heaven', 'Sunset Glow', 'Last Farewell', 'Feeling', and 'Flower Road', before the night arrived at one of its most poignant moments.

For 'Still Life', G-DRAGON, TAEYANG, and DAESUNG sat together onstage as former member T.O.P's recorded verse played in full. After performing his parts themselves elsewhere in the concert, leaving his voice untouched here made for a quiet tribute that resonated with longtime fans.

For a group whose return once seemed uncertain, the Oakland shows became more than a nostalgia trip. As G-DRAGON put it to the packed stadium: “BIGBANG is so back.”
