Composer and conductor Henry Cheng re-imagines BTS' discography as a classical suite with 'Suite for ARMY' – listen

BTS' music just got re-imagined as an orchestral suite.

Conductor, composer, and producer Henry Cheng has unveiled 'Suite for ARMY', a classically composed work inspired by BTS' discography and their classical influences, such as Bach, Chopin, and Wagner.

The 10-part suite features a re-imagined take of 'No More Dream', 'Boy in Luv', 'Baepsae', 'Blood Sweat and Tears', 'Spring Day', 'Fake Love', 'Boy with Love', 'Ugh', 'Young Forever', and 'Dynamite' all woven beautifully into a 15-minute offering.

According to Cheng, BTS' classical music influence can be heard directly. "In 'Fake Love', 'Blood Sweat and Tears', and 'Euphoria', the band quotes Chopin’s 'Farewell' Waltz Op. 69 No. 1, Bach’s Mass in B minor – Kyrie, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, and Buxtehude’s Passacaglia," he shares on his website.

"The 'Suite for ARMY' takes these direct quotes from Chopin and Bach while using Debussy and Buxtehude as inspiration for orchestration and color," Cheng adds. "The philosophical beliefs, compositional techniques, and personal stories of Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Stravinsky are the sonic glue that binds BTS and Classical Music."

'Suite for ARMY' premiered at the Total Museum in Seoul as part of the Beyond the Scene exhibition, which also tied with the BTS: The Third Global Interdisciplinary Conference in July.

Cheng is currently working on his next BTS-inspired work, focusing on Beethoven.
