Introducing: Korean rapper BIGONE on pursuing happiness, experimenting with music, and working with JAY B on 'Windy Day'

BIGONE has a lot of talents but it all centres around one thing. Whether it's as a dancer or a composer or a rapper, the Korean act has always been fuelled by his love for music.

Not wanting to be restricted to a particular sound or style, BIGONE—who is known in real life as Kim Daeli—relishes exploring different musical avenues. From hip-hop to rock, the 'EVERY NIGHT' act is all about following what feels right.

"I don’t want to make boundaries in my music. I just want to make a sound that I like," he tells Bandwagon

Most recently, BIGONE released the pop-rock track 'Windy Day' in collaboration with his long-time friend JAY B. Inspired by his own misfortunes with love, the dynamic single is the first release in a long line of music he has for the year—which he shares is slated to be the busiest time of his life.

Bandwagon caught up with BIGONE to talk about his creative process, pursuing happiness, and working on 'Windy Day' with JAY B.

Hi BIGONE! Tell us, how did you know you wanted to pursue music?

My parents were both working when I was young, so I used to listen to cassette tapes and CDs, which comforted me a lot. Then I started dancing, and it led me to listen to more music, and I started thinking about what it would be like to make these kinds of music.

Your music blends a lot of sounds and genres like rock and hip-hop, how would you describe the music that you make?

I think the songs recently I released, ‘EVERY NIGHT’ and ‘Windy Day’, are closer to the rock genre. However, I don’t want to make boundaries in my music. I just want to make a sound that I like.

Who are some artists that you look up to?

If I could pick three artists I like and respect the most, I’ll say Seo Taiji, Yoo Jae-ha, and GD. If you listen to my music, you’ll figure out why.

Congratulations on the release of ‘Windy Day’! Could you walk us through the story behind the track?

The wind blew while I was taking a walk and the thought ‘Is this the same wind that I got cheated up by my ex?’ popped into my mind. While the wind was blowing, it felt like I was in the past and on that memory. Then the idea that the wind could bring us a particular moment came up, and I started to write the song.

How did the collaboration with JAY B come about? What was it like working with him?

I have known JAY B since young, and Jinyoung of GOT7 is my hometown brother, so we used to meet each other a few times. Working with him was really successful. JAY B is wonderful, kind, generous, and perfectly professional.

Who are other artists that you hope to collaborate with in the future?

The most crucial point in collaborating is that the artist should get along with the music or should be needed to the music. So, I am not actually thinking about who to collaborate with now.

Most recently, you have been involved with The Dial Music. What prompted this decision and what do you hope to achieve through the label?

I am not the one who established the label but it would be great to think of me as a representative artist. I needed a space to serve my colour, so I came up with it! What I hope to achieve through the label is to continue music happily.

What do you think is your biggest strength as an artist?

Clean spirit and healthy body!

Where do you hope to see yourself in the next few years?

I want to be happy, just like now.

Share with us any upcoming projects you have.

I am preparing for my studio album. I will make this year full of BIGONE’s songs, so please look forward to it. Also, I am always thankful; I will be BIGONE who tries to return your favour. Love you!
