Sony Pictures announces animated musical K-Pop: Demon Hunters in the works

There's a new animated flick fans of K-Pop and badass demon-slaying ladies shouldn't miss.

On Tuesday (03/09), Oscar-winning studio Sony Pictures Animation announced that it is developing a new movie called K-Pop: Demon Hunters, a film that follows the story of K-Pop stars who hack and slash demons while balancing their lives under the spotlight. The animated musical willl be directed by Maggie Kang (The Lego Ninjago Movie) and Chris Appelhans (Wish Dragon).

K-Pop: Demon Hunters pays homage to Kang's Korean heritage and the K-Pop music she grew up with.

“Having been a fan of the genre since its beginnings in the ’90s, this film is my love letter to K-Pop and my Korean roots," Kang tells Variety. "It encompasses and celebrates everything K-Pop is—it’s the film I would want to see as a lifelong fan and I hope the millions of K-Pop fans out there in the world will feel the same."

Appelhans adds that he'd “always wanted to do a film about the power of music—to unite, bring joy, build community." He says, "K-Pop is the greatest embodiment of this in our lifetime, and we’re really excited to honor and showcase that through the lens of animation.”
